Bulletproof Coffee or Keto Fatty Coffee is a rich, decadent way to incorporate more satisfying Keto fat into your ketogenic diet. It was made famous with the original Bulletproof Coffee Recipe. But in the years since Bulletproof Coffee was introduced in 2009, people have been searching for alternatives to bulletproof coffee recipes.

Why Drink Bulletproof Coffee on a Keto Diet?

The reasons to add fatty coffee to a keto diet are as different as every individual. There’s no one reason, just like there is no one right way.

Reason #1 – Bulletproof Coffee as a Keto Fat Booster

For some Keto Diet beginners, Fatty Coffee is a necessary Keto Fat Booster that helps them hit their keto fat macro target each day. However, it is different than our other Advantage Meals Keto Fat Boosters, because it’s not an addition to your low carb meals but a standalone drink.

Reason #2 – Keto Fatty Coffee as a Meal Replacement

For others on keto, some version of bulletproof coffee is actually used to replace a meal. Packed with good fats and substantial calories, fatty coffee can be an alternative to the more standard keto breakfast of bacon and eggs.

Reason #3 – Bulletproof Coffee as a Savory Fat Bomb Alternative

Fatty Coffee is also often used as a fat bomb alternative. Sometimes even fat bombs that are sweetened with Keto approved sweeteners can trigger habitual or emotional eating. Having another option available can help you get past your trigger, while supplying satiating fat.

Reason #4 – Keto Fatty Coffee to begin Intermittent Fasting

Along the same lines, drinking a Fatty Coffee as your breakfast can be a stepping stone to adding intermittent fasting to your keto diet. If you want to try keto intermittent fasting (IF) but aren’t sure how just skipping breakfast will work for you, Fatty Coffee can help you bridge the gap.

When having Keto Fatty Coffee for breakfast, you won’t sit down to eat your breakfast the way you used to, but you’ll still be taking in significant calories. You can get used to breaking the “meal” habit part of breakfast.  With that habit weakening, you can then start enjoying your Fatty Coffee later and later each morning until eventually you realize you’re starting to have it at lunchtime! Tada, you just added intermittent fasting to your keto diet.

What kind of fat in Keto Bulletproof Coffee?

The original Bulletproof Coffee recipe is two parts butter to one part MCT Oil for a total of roughly 4 teaspoons to 4 tablespoons of fat.  As you can see, that’s a wide range of fat in your Bulletproof Coffee Recipe. We’ll talk more about how to decide how much fat you need in your Keto Fatty Coffee later.

Not only can you decide how much fat is right for you, you can (and should!) also decide what kinds of fat work best for you in your Keto Fatty Coffee.

Not everyone is good with blending MCT oil and butter into their coffee and that’s ok. I know I tried and it didn’t work for me.

Personally, MCT oil, like coconut oil, just doesn’t play nice with me. I’ve tried repeatedly, with the same results each time. The health benefits of coconut oil and the health claims for MCT Oil are amazing, but my digestive system just doesn’t handle either well.  I can do coconut butter – I eat some just about every day in my Chocolate Coconut Fat Bombs. But coconut oil and MCT oil (usually derived from coconut oil) makes me bloated even when intermittent fasting.

For my Keto Fatty Coffee, I like 2 Tablespoon Heavy Cream and a teaspoon of Ghee. My husband prefers 1 Tablespoon Coconut Oil and 1 Tablespoon Heavy Cream.  We both add collagen to our coffee, and we’ll get back to that shortly.

There is no one right way to keto.  Experiment with different keto fat sources for your fatty coffee and find the ones that meet your personal preferences and work well with your digestive system.

By now, you shouldn’t be surprised to hear us say that there is no one right answer to this question.

  • How much fat to do you need to feel full?

Why add collagen to your Bulletproof Coffee?

Because Keto Fatty Coffee makes some people jittery or anxious

Some people find that having so much fat, along with caffeine, makes them jittery or anxious.  If that’s the case, you may want to add protein to your Fatty Coffee to balance the fat and caffeine. We do this in the form of collagen hydrolysate, which also has added benefits for your skin, hair and joints!

Pro Tip #1: Blend your Fatty Coffee in a Magic Bullet Blender. Put the fat in the bullet first, then pour a little coffee on top to melt it. Once it’s melted, add more coffee but not enough to fill the Bullet cup. You want a couple of inches of headroom. Then blend away.

Once your fatty coffee is frothy, pour the contents into your coffee mug. Top with a sprinkle of cinnamon or apple pie spice mix, if you like! You can also add a little more coffee to top off your mug if you need it.

Before you walk away, clean up is super easy with the Magic Bullet. Just fill it halfway with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Whiz it on the blender again, and after a quick rinse, set it in the dish rack to be ready for tomorrow morning.

We love the flavor our homemade bone broth with added butter.  If you can’t make your own bone broth, buy the best available that fits within your budget. The best organic bone broth we’ve found is from one of our great sponsors, The Osso Good Company.
  2. Keto Bulletproof Tea – It doesn’t have to be coffee, hot tea works just as well. You just need to be a little more careful with your fat choices as the flavor of most teas isn’t as robust to mask other flavors.  If you’re a tea drinker, just experiment.
  3. Keto Bulletproof Cocoa – This is certainly a less savory alternative to Bulletproof coffee, but it’s a winner. Our basic recipe is Organic Cacao Powder, Hot Water, Heavy Cream, and keto-approved sweetener to taste.
