Mushrooms are great food; they are full of nutrients. They have been around for thousands of years and are very healthy packed with essential vitamins and minerals, many of which are hard to get in other foods.

They are a good source of Vitamin B1, B2, and D, niacin, potassium, selenium, dietary fibers, and antioxidants. In addition to this, they do not contain any cholesterol and are low in carbs, fats, sodium, and calories.

Their consumption provides many benefits, and many of the nutrients found in mushrooms effectively prevent diseases and chronic illnesses.  So are they keto friendly?

Mushrooms can be consumed on a keto diet because they are relatively low carb, with the lowest carb mushroom variety having only 3.26 grams of carbohydrates per 100 grams serving size.

The keto diet aims at a low carb, moderate protein, and high good fat diet.

That is why mushrooms begin low in carbs and high in other nutrients are ideal for this diet. Mushrooms definitely meet the standard of the keto diet.

There are many different types of mushrooms. Generally, all are keto-friendly, but some are more low carb than the others, such as white mushrooms and portabella, which are relatively lower in carbs than the other varieties.

Which Varieties of Mushrooms Are Lowest Carb?

Mushrooms are generally low in carbs, and that is why they are ideal for the keto diet. As you can see in the above-given table, some are lower than the others.

The lowest carb mushroom of the common edible mushrooms is the White Mushroom or Button Mushroom. At only 2.26 grams of carbs per 100 gram serving it has less than half the carbs of some other varieties and is very common in most grocery stores.

How Big Of Serving Is 100 Grams Of Mushrooms?

On average, one cup of mushrooms weighs about 90 Grams. Of course, that will vary slightly by the variety of mushrooms.

A pretty standard serving of mushrooms is half a cup which contains roughly 1.2 grams of net carbs.

A serving of sliced white or portobello mushrooms, which are the most popular varieties, contains approximately the same amount of net carbs. These two varieties are the lowest in carbs than the other mushrooms.

According to this, you can easily enjoy a single serving of mushrooms every day when you are on a keto diet; just remember to keep track of the other carbs you are consuming to stay within the limit of 20 grams of carbs per day.

Are Morel Mushrooms Keto Friendly?

Morel mushrooms are very keto friendly. While they are higher in total carbs than others at 5.1 grams total carbs. However, they also have higher dietary fiber 2.8 grams.

The only reason that Morel mushrooms aren’t listed among the ‘most keto friendly mushrooms’ is that they are so hard to find.

Morels have never been successfully raised on a commercial level, so you’ll seldom find them at the grocery store. When you do find them for sale, you are probably buying them from someone who found them growing in the wild.
